The failure of the Karnataka authorities to stand against religious intolerance has yielded sad yet expected results

Incidents of communal violence have risen sharply in Karnataka state in recent months, and anti-Muslim sentiments are on the rise.

First there was the hijab controversy that began on 28 December 2021 when the authorities of an educational institution in Udipi, Karnataka banned six Muslim girls from entering with their hijabs (headscarves) on. Several other colleges followed suit with bans that were upheld by the Karnataka High Court on 15 March 2022.

State-sanctioned intolerance

Ministers in the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), meanwhile have not shied away from expressing their radical agenda. In February 2022 the senior BJP leader in Karnataka, K S Eshwarappa, said that a day would come when the ‘saffron’ flag (a symbol of Hindu nationalism) would become the national flag.

El Zersetzung cubano: Las tácticas disruptivas de la Stasi empleadas por el Gobierno Cubano para desintegrar la vida de la iglesia en Cuba

El Ministerium für Staatsicherheit, más comúnmente conocido como la Stasi, fue el servicio oficial de seguridad del Estado de la República Democrática Alemana (RDA), una de las agencias de policía secreta más represivas y conocidas de la historia.

Desde su fundación en febrero de 1950, hasta la caída del muro de Berlín en noviembre de 1989, la Stasi creó una vasta red de inteligencia, recopilando información y apuntando a individuos y grupos en todas las esferas de la vida con una eficiencia despiadada e insidiosa.

La Stasi empleó varias técnicas básicas en sus ataques contra individuos y comunidades. Los interrogatorios persistentes, la difusión de información difamatoria, los arrestos repetidos, los ataques físicos y los ataques contra familiares y amigos como palanca eran todos comunes. Estas técnicas formaron la base de Zersetzung, una misión con el objetivo de interrumpir o “desintegrar” la estructura y el trabajo de los grupos y la vida de los individuos.

Tú eres mi otro yo: La importancia de educar a las mujeres mexicanas del futuro

Florinda tenía apenas 11 años cuando su familia fue desplazada de la comunidad de San José Yashtinín, Municipio de San Cristóbal de las Casas, en el estado de Chiapas, México en 2012. No pudo continuar con sus estudios durante dos años después del desplazamiento de su familia porque el papeleo y los certificados que necesitaba para inscribirse en una nueva escuela se quedaron en el lugar del que tuvo que huir. En 2019 en una entrevista con CSW mencionó que esperaba terminar sus estudios para enseñar a otros niños.

Otra mujer, Alma, tenía 17 años cuando su educación fue interrumpida después de que su familia fuera desplazada por la fuerza de su comunidad en Tuxpan de Bolaños, Municipio de Bolaños, en el Estado de Jalisco, en diciembre de 2017. Posteriormente no pudo inscribirse en una nueva escuela, por lo que tuvo que renunciar a sus planes de convertirse en enfermera.

Hace tres años, para conmemorar el Día del Niño en México, Alma viajó a la Ciudad de México para reunirse con funcionarios del gobierno. También se reunió con el Consejo Nacional para Prevenir la Discriminación (CONAPRED) quien lamentó lo sucedido: “Les debemos una disculpa, este país les debe una disculpa… Ciertamente hemos fallado en el proceso, pero estamos aquí para protegerte, para que tu trayectoria en la vida sea lo que tú has deseado que sea“.

Cuban Zersetzung: The disruptive Stasi tactics employed by the Cuban government to disintegrate church life in Cuba

The Ministerium für Staatsicherheit, more commonly known as the Stasi, was the official state security service of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), one of the most repressive and well-known secret police agencies in history.

From its foundation in February 1950, to the fall of the Berlin wall in November 1989, the Stasi created a vast intelligence network, gathering information and targeting individuals and groups in every sphere of life with ruthless and insidious efficiency.

The Stasi employed several staple techniques in their attacks against individuals and communities. Persistent questioning, the spreading of slanderous information, repeated arrests, physical attacks and the targeting of family and friends as leverage were all commonplace. These techniques formed the basis of Zersetzung, a mission with the objective of disrupting or ‘disintegrating’ the structure and work of groups and the lives of individuals.

You are my other me: The importance of educating the Mexican women of the future

Florinda was just 11 years old when her family was displaced from the community of San José Yashtinín, San Cristóbal de las Casas Municipality, in Mexico’s Chiapas State in 2012. She was unable to continue with her studies for around two years following her family’s displacement because the paperwork and certificates she needed to enrol in a new school were left behind. In 2019 she told CSW she hoped to finish her studies in order to teach other children.

Another woman, Alma, was 17 years old when her education was interrupted after her family was forcibly displaced from their village of Tuxpan de Bolaños, Bolaños Municipality, Jalisco State, in December 2017. She was subsequently unable to enrol in a new school, derailing her plans to become a nurse.

Three years ago, to mark Children’s Day in the country, Alma travelled to Mexico City to meet with government officials. She also met with the National Council to Prevent Discrimination (CONAPRED) who expressed regret for what had happened: “We owe you an apology, this country owes you an apology…We have certainly failed in the process but we are here to protect you, so that your trajectory in life is what you want it to be.”
